Heart Health Lesson Plans for Kids

Heart Smarts: Food Choices

A healthy heart requires two important things: eating healthy food and exercise. This activity will help students differentiate between healthy and not-so-healthy foods.

Materials: Pictures of food from magazines, empty food packages, plastic food- any kind of real or pretend food item, a paper grocery bag

Procedure: Tell students that they get to help with the shopping this week. If you pull an item out of the bag that they think is heart healthy, they should stand up out of their chairs. If you pull out an item that is not so good for your heart, they should squat to the floor. As you pull out the pictures or packages, divide them into two piles according to what the students decide. Try to pick a few items that might trick them, such as popcorn (depends on the topping) or pizza (can be a healthy choice, depends on how you make it).

Heart Smarts: Physical Activity

Materials: Pictures of people doing different activities that are both active and sedementary or just a list of activities to call out

Prodecure: Same as with the food choices above- have students stand up for physically active activities and squat down for sedimentary activities. Toss in a few that could go either way. Ex: playing video games can be active. Have the kids brainstorm what activities can they do inside that are active.
